What Is Telemedicine?

A secure video visit with your own physician

Telemedicine allows you to meet with your healthcare provider by secure video using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. During the appointment, you can discuss your symptoms, review medications and test results, and receive medical advice and recommendations without traveling to the office.

Care from home

Reduce travel and waiting-room time while maintaining continuity with your physician.

Medication & lab review

Review test results, discuss medication effects, and request refills when clinically appropriate.

Continuity of care

Maintain continuity with your physician and care team for appropriate follow-up visits.

Choosing the Right Visit

What Can Be Addressed Through Telemedicine?

Telemedicine may be appropriate for:

  • Follow-up visits for established patients
  • Blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, cholesterol, and other chronic-condition follow-up
  • Review of laboratory or imaging results
  • Medication review and refill requests, when clinically appropriate
  • Questions about medication effects or side effects
  • Weight-management follow-up
  • Mild cold, allergy, sinus, or respiratory symptoms
  • Minor skin concerns that can be adequately viewed by video
  • Discussion of a new medical concern to determine the appropriate next step
  • Eligible follow-up after an immigration medical exam

An office visit is usually needed for:

  • Annual physical examinations
  • Symptoms requiring a complete physical exam
  • Vaccinations, injections, procedures, or specimen collection
  • Blood draws or other diagnostic testing
  • New or unexplained abdominal pain
  • Significant swelling, weakness, or loss of function
  • Wounds, injuries, or suspected fractures
  • Symptoms that are severe or difficult to assess by video
A virtual visit may identify the need for an office examination, laboratory testing, imaging, urgent care, or emergency evaluation.

What to Expect

  • Have your medications or an updated medication list available.
  • Have the name and telephone number of your preferred pharmacy available.
  • Write down your symptoms, questions, and when the problem began.
  • Have recent home readings available when relevant, such as blood pressure, temperature, weight, blood glucose, or pulse.
  • Upload or provide requested medical records or test results before the appointment.

At the beginning of the appointment, we may:

Safety First

Telemedicine is not an emergency service

Medical Emergency

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, major trauma, a severe allergic reaction, or other severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

When you are uncertain, contact our office. Our staff can help determine whether telemedicine, an in-person office visit, urgent care, or emergency evaluation is most appropriate.

What a telemedicine visit can — and cannot — provide

A telemedicine appointment does not automatically result in a prescription, medication refill, work note, medical form, referral, or other requested documentation. Recommendations are based on the medical information available and the physician's clinical assessment.

An in-person examination, medical records, laboratory testing, imaging, or other evaluation may be required before treatment can be prescribed or documentation can be completed.

The purpose of the visit

A telemedicine visit provides a medical evaluation. It does not guarantee a predetermined treatment, prescription, refill, or document.

Immigration Medical Follow-Up

Follow-up after your immigration exam

USCIS immigration medical examinations must be completed in person. Certain questions or follow-up discussions after the examination may be addressed by telemedicine when appropriate.
